Saothrú is a Nursery, Garden Centre and Sustainability Training Hub facility in Carndonagh for Spraoi agus Spórt. An existing steel frame structure is to be retained and extended with a low carbon construction philosophy. The approach is intended to cut carbon emissions by 50-70%, lock in circularity by treating the existing building as a ‘material bank’ and reduce demolition waste preserving the carbon value of the existing structure. Deep finned canopies are added each side of the building to create sheltered external spaces, reduce solar gain and allow for extended floor plates while giving distinct and inclusive identity to the complex.
