East End Sawmills
Glasgow
Completed: 2007
Design Principal: Robin Lee
Conceived of as an independent pavilion or kiosk set within the public realm the new structure houses a showroom and office. Constructed entirely of material sourced from the adjacent timber warehouse the building gives appropriate identity and expression to the existing facility. Composed of a series of storey-height trusses, manufactured in planed softwood the structure directly expresses its method of assembly and the structural methodology. Externally the building is clad in vertically orientated softwood slats providing solar shading and giving weight and solidity the framed structure. Internally the spaces are lined uniformly in standard sheets of Oriented Strand Board.
The singular form and material expression results in a building with a strong physical presence and clear identity.
