Presented with the challenge of an archetypal white walled gallery space the resultant design solution was to line the gallery in reclaimed timber from a recently demolished local church. This created an enclosed yet familiar environment in clear contrast to the existing neutral space. This created an environment imbued with the quality and character of the pre-existing yet no longer existing building. The timber linings enveloping the space created a distinctive atmosphere with a hushed acoustic quality making a setting both redolent of the former church and an appropriately studious environment for the exhibition content. Local task lighting was utilised throughout, eschewing traditional overhead exhibition lighting, to create an intimate atmosphere.
Against this backdrop a series of display structures were placed each designed to present a selected architectural project via a range of media including lightboxes, bound books of construction drawings, working models and physical samples.
