Big Slope
Glasgow
Completed: 2006
Partner in Charge / Project Architect / Design Principal: Robin Lee
The interior design and fit out for the 'Big Slope' bar included the restructuring of an existing bar and restaurant. Located at basement level within a Victorian tenement block in the heart of Glasgow an internalised space was created, inspired by Adolf Loos' Karntner Bar in Vienna from 1908. Dark leather seating booths with warm concealed lighting creates an intimate, luxurious environment far removed from the city outside. Bespoke wall panels were made using traditional marquetry techniques in addition to digital flat printing in order to make richly layered linings. The panels were developed in close collaboration with manufacturers using traditional and contemporary technologies.
A bar area uses teak parquet blocks throughout, adding further rich texture to the space. Teak blocks were used across all surfaces to create a uniform treatment with a strong sense of enclosure. The space was populated with a carefully curated collection of timeless objects and artefacts.
