Situated in the foothills of the Campsie Fells and Kilpatrick Hills and close to the rural town of Strathblane in Central Scotland the new building was made as an annex to an existing and traditional single storey dwelling. The new structure sits in a loose relationship to the existing building, clearly disconnected spatially and formally. This arrangement extends the existing local pattern of incrementally developed steadings and farm holdings and allows for an autonomous formal expression.

The envelope of the building is treated in a homogenous manner in order to reinforce its strong physical and sculptural presence. In this way the building can be seen as both an abstract form set within and scaled to the landscape, and a distillation of the local, rural typologies. Common to both of these intentions is the urge towards a reduced, muted expression in dialogue with the power of the landscape.
